Through the Bible in a Year

What is this about?

We at St. John's have decided that we want to be a community that is well grounded in scripture, and know well the over-arching narrative that forms us. So we are using the 2011-2012 year to read through, discuss, think about, and learn about many of the major themes that form the core of our scriptures. We have laid out a reading schedule, and superimposed it over the Revised Common Lectionary. We will be looking at the highlighted texts, most weeks between October and next September. We hope you will join us in this journey, we expect it will be rewarding, encouraging, and help us to grow in our faith. Don't be shy if you join us in the middle, we are expecting people to do this, and will make sure that you don't feel lost or left out. Looking forward to having you join us!

So what is the schedule?

You can look at our schedule here. The link connects to a document that lays out the Readings for the week, and the key text for the week. For instance, in Church on Nov 6th we will be looking at Genesis 3 to 11. We have entitled it "Sin and its Consequences, and the key text is highlighted as Genesis 3:1-24. another example would be August 12th where the area of focus is on Romans 8 "Life in the Spirit" and the key text is Romans 8:1-17

What do I need to do?

We hope you will pick up in church or download here, the schedule, and read along with us. You will get the most out of the discussion, if you read all of the scripture passage, through the week, and then read again the key text, as you prepare to come to church on Sunday.

What other resources are there?

Watch this space! As we come close to the week we will be studying, there may be links of interest on our web site (right here!).

On Wednesday, we are having Morning Prayer services at 10:30 am. These will not be traditional Morning Prayer! Instead we will take the opportunity to read and discuss together the text, and then pray for our church, our community, and the world. If you have the time on Wednesday morning it will be a great way to dig deeper.

Do I need a Special Book or buy a Study Guide?

You certainly need a special book, but you probably already own it. Bring your Bible and be ready to read it!
